Qual­i­fi­ca­tion Train­ing for Com­mu­ni­ty Inter­preters in Healthcare

When peo­ple with refugee or migra­tion back­grounds need med­ical care, effec­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion between patients and health­care pro­fes­sion­als is essen­tial. In hos­pi­tals, med­ical prac­tices and psy­chother­a­py set­tings, lan­guage bar­ri­ers can lead to uncer­tain­ty, mis­un­der­stand­ings, incor­rect diag­noses and inap­pro­pri­ate treatment.

To address this need, fka – Fre­un­deskreis Asyl Karl­sruhe e.V. offers a free qual­i­fi­ca­tion train­ing for cur­rent and future com­mu­ni­ty inter­preters in health­care. The train­ing com­bines pro­fes­sion­al knowl­edge with prac­ti­cal inter­pret­ing exer­cis­es and pre­pares par­tic­i­pants to work in med­ical and ther­a­peu­tic settings.

Who is this train­ing for?

The qual­i­fi­ca­tion is intend­ed for peo­ple who:

• have a good com­mand of Ger­man and at least one addi­tion­al lan­guage.
• are inter­est­ed in work­ing as com­mu­ni­ty inter­preters in healthcare.
• would like to gain the knowl­edge and prac­ti­cal skills required for this role.

There is a par­tic­u­lar need for inter­preters in Russ­ian, Ukrain­ian, Ara­bic, Turk­ish, Per­sian, Kur­dish, Dari, Soma­li, Amhar­ic, Chi­nese, Uyghur, Eng­lish, French and oth­er com­mu­ni­ty languages.

Train­ing Topics

Par­tic­i­pants will work on:

• Work­ing with trau­ma respons­es and psy­choso­cial challenges
• Med­ical and psy­cho­log­i­cal terminology
• The role, respon­si­bil­i­ties and pro­fes­sion­al iden­ti­ty of com­mu­ni­ty interpreters
• Inter­pret­ing techniques
• Com­mu­ni­ca­tion in med­ical and ther­a­peu­tic settings
• Prac­ti­cal tri­adic inter­pret­ing exercises
