Political cartoons from Gambia
Artist Aba T. Hydara, born in 1975, lives in Barra, on the north bank of the Gambia River. His political cartoons and caricatures address the crimes and horrific torture under former President Yahya Jammeh, and also deal with issues such as the threat of Islamist extremism in The Gambia, the growing unsustainable exploitation of nature, and corruption within the political elite and its disingenuous advisory role. An overarching theme is the snail’s pace of Gambia’s development in places such as his hometown of Barra, a supposedly clean, tourist-friendly coastal community.
His big dream is to establish a creative learning and information center for children (CLICK) to enable young people to explore their creativity and develop arts and crafts in Barra (North Bank Region) to give a future to young people who fail in the formal school system. In this respect, Aba T. Hydara is a contributor to out-of-school cultural education for Namél e.V. and the CCC.
