PARENTAL ALLOWANCE

Elterngeld (parental allowance) is available to mothers or fathers after the birth of their child.
The best way to apply for parental allowance is online — it’s the quickest way.
You can prepare your parental allowance application before the birth.

Parental allowance makes up for a lack of income if parents want to be there for their child after the birth and therefore interrupt or reduce their work.

What documents do I need?
✅ Birth certificate (in the original)
✅ Proof of your income
✅ Please contact us by phone for any other documents you may need

There are different types of parental allowance:

Basic parental allowance — Basiselterngeld

Parental allowance plus — Elterngeld Plus

  • Swap 1 month of Basic Parental Allowance for 2 months of Parental Allowance Plus.
This gives you up to 24 months of Parental Allowance Plus.
  • As a couple, you can receive up to 28 months together.
  • Single parents can also receive 28 months.
  • You will receive a maximum of half of the Basic Parental Allowance per month.

Partnership bonus months — Partnerschaftsbonusmonate

  • As a couple, you can each receive up to 4 additional months of Parental Allowance Plus.
  • The prerequisite is that you both work part-time during this time. If your child is born on or after 01.09.2021, you must work between 24 and 32 hours per week.
  • You can also take advantage of this offer together if you and the other parent are raising your child separately. If you are a single parent, you can take advantage of the offer alone.

Child maintenance

You can claim 💶 money (maintenance) for your underage child from the other parent.
There are two ways to do this:

1. A normal procedure at the family court.
2. A simpler and faster procedure — the “simplified procedure”.

For the simplified procedure, you must complete and submit a 📋 form.

This procedure is often quicker and costs less money than the normal procedure.
At the end, you will receive an official document that you can use to claim maintenance.

It is important that you speak to a ⚖️ lawyer or the youth welfare office beforehand. They will tell you whether this procedure is right for you.

💡Tip: The staff at the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) are on hand to help single mothers and fathers with maintenance issues and help to enforce justified claims. The advice is free of charge.

Competent authority

- Karlsruhe Local Court
- Local Court Karlsruhe-Durlach

the local court (family court) in whose district the child or the parent representing the child usually resides.

Requirements

✔️ It concerns maintenance:
- for a minor child or
- for a child of full age for the past period of minority.
✔️ The court has not yet initiated court maintenance proceedings.
✔️ No other court has already ruled on the maintenance claim.
✔️ There is not yet an enforceable maintenance title (e.g. a youth welfare office certificate).
✔️ The requested maintenance for the child is not higher than 1.2 times the minimum maintenance.

✔️ You are entitled to assert the maintenance claim as the
- custodial parent with whom the minor child lives, or
- the person or body legally representing the child.
