„Lightyard Stories: “Visions of Urban Living Spaces”
Karlsruhe shines — Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival
The Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival 2026 Karlsruhe are one of Europe’s largest media art festivals and a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar. From 13 August to 13 September, international artists transform the façade of Karlsruhe Palace into a spectacular display of light, music and digital art. Admission is free.
In 2026, marking the 200th anniversary of the death of architect Friedrich Weinbrenner, this year’s festival focuses on architecture, urban spaces and the future of city life. Under the theme “Lightyard Stories: Visions of Urban Living”, the projections celebrate the unique architecture and creative spirit of Karlsruhe, a UNESCO City of Media Arts.
The experience goes beyond the palace. As part of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival 2026, media art, light installations and digital artworks are displayed throughout the city centre and several neighbourhoods, turning Karlsruhe into an open-air exhibition space.
Some installations also explore themes such as identity, migration, belonging and community, making the festival especially meaningful for visitors discovering Karlsruhe from different cultural perspectives.
