Understanding Germany: Intercultural aspects for living & working in Germany

Quick’n easy Germany

This Thinkcenter offers a practical and interactive introduction to the topic of “Living and arriving in Germany”. We will take a brief look at the fundamental question: What is culture — and how does it shape our thoughts, actions and expectations? In this context, we will also look at typical characteristics that are often associated with “the Germans”. The aim is to create an initial understanding of cultural differences and similarities.

Participants will then be given the opportunity to reflect on their own intercultural experiences in small groups. Which encounters were particularly formative? What made them positive or challenging? The exchange serves to broaden personal perspectives and to learn from each other.

Another focus of the lecture will be on the topic of finding a job in Germany. In particular, it will focus on the expectations of German recruiters and intercultural particularities during job interviews. Participants will receive helpful tips on how to prepare for job application situations in a German working environment.

The next thematic block deals with social life: How can you make friends in Germany and establish and maintain social contacts? What role do leisure activities, invitations and exchanges play in everyday life? In addition, specific offers from the Karlsruhe region will be presented — including clubs, events and festivals — which can serve as starting points for new encounters.
